Blog Hosting
A common but major issue that clinches ones mind while thinking of his own blog is - to have a blog hosted on his own site or hosting it on one of the major blog hosting sites, such as WordPress.com, Blogger or Typepad. All have their own prospects as detailed below.
WordPress.com - WordPress.com offers free hosting but they have a strict "non-commercial use" policy and enforce it strictly enough. If they see that you are trying to sell something, have plenty of affiliate links through them and that you are not just talking of your area of expertise but trying to business it through them, they delete the blogs without a prior warning or backup of your blogs. They do offer a commercial-grade hosting service, but at $300 a month, it's clearly not targeted at small business.
Blogger / BlogSpot - Blogger.com is the authoring service, and provides the option to either host the blog on your own site or on Blogspot.com for free. ALthough, it does not hold any non-commercial policy as such but considering numerous splogging, spam blogs which steal any copyrigthed content, it can delete any genuine blogs too on basis of doubt of spam. ALthogh blogs can be reinstated without any content loss but that usually takes a few days.
Typepad - Typepad.com is purely a blog hosting service, not a full-fledged web hosting service. You can host commercial blogs, and even on your own domain. Its good if one is using one or more blogs as business themselves but if blogs are being made to support business, then this option doesn't help much.
MySpace, LiveJournal, etc. - It has been seen that running one's blog within a blog-based community, such as LiveJournal or even MySpace, could make sense - if and only if that's where your target market is. Like some professionals or companies had run some campaigns on Myspace and held blogging, group participation etc over there itself for the same purpose. As seen, all of the successful internet marketers and affiliate marketers on MySpace are using their blogs. Most of them also have their own blogs on their own sites as well, but they do use the blogs within MySpace as a marketing channel.
Blog i360 - Its soon coming and the internet is looking forward to what really it brings alongwith.
Hosting on your own site - If one has his own site and is thinking of a blog for business promotion, this is the best option. Having it on own site gives complete control, one can integrate it into the navigation of his site and make it a seamless user experience.
